Leveller’s proof of concept for the decentralized entertainment investing platform.
When the psychological horror film The Night had its Iranian theatrical release in late February 2021, it marked a milestone not just for the entertainment-production studio that helped fund it, but for the U.S. industry at large: The Night became the first U.S.-produced film to hit Iranian theaters in more than 40 years.
Centered around an Iranian couple living in the U.S., Babak and Neda, and their baby daughter, The Night tells the story of what happens when they check into the menacing Hotel Normandie. Unable to leave, and facing increasingly frightening events, the couple are forced to face the dark secrets they’ve hidden from each other during a night that seems to never end.
Directed by Khourosh Ahari and starring the Cannes Palme d’Or Best Actor winner Shabab Hosseini (Babak) and Niousha Jafarian (Neda), the film has received excellent reviews from Hollywood Reporter, The Guardian, Los Angeles Times, Bazaar and many others.
The mainly Farsi-language film is not only notable for its successful export to Iran; as the first completed project to be funded through Leveller, it’s also proof of concept for the decentralized entertainment investing platform.
Leveller is Changing How Hollywood Finances Entertainment
The mission of Leveller is to “Change the Story” by opening up the film industry to filmmakers and storytellers who have and continue to be underrepresented by the most powerful Hollywood studios.
Doing this requires changing the model used by the major studios, which concentrates power and control in just a few, influential hands, and results in pushing voices of minority creators further to the margins.
“This is the dynamic Leveller was created to disrupt.” says Ryan Clarkson, CEO of Leveller. “The studio’s blockchain-powered “crowdinvesting” platform will allow curated projects to receive investments from people who believe in the work and want to support it. Using Ethereum smart contracts, the investments and partnerships Leveller facilitates are transparent and seamless, allowing anyone to invest in a project, and allowing the creator to retain greater creative control of their work.”
Leveller’s Open Investment Opportunities
Currently, Leveller has three opportunities available for investors: a stop-motion animation feature called The Inventor, the live-action ecoterrorism thriller Homegrown, and the animated family film Night of the Zoombies
The Inventor is a stop-motion adventure film about the life of Leonardo da Vinci, written and directed by Jim Capobianco, the Academy Award-nominated writer of Pixar’s Ratatouille. The insatiably curious and headstrong inventor Leonardo da Vinci leaves Italy to join the French court, where he can experiment freely, inventing flying contraptions, incredible machines, and studying the human body. There, joined in his adventure by the audacious princess Marguerite, Leonardo will uncover the answer to the ultimate question: “What is the meaning of it all?”
Homegrown tells the story of a teenage boy raised in total seclusion and indoctrinated by his enigmatic father (Liev Schreiber of Ray Donovan, Spotlight). When his father is incarcerated, the boy is sent to live with a foster family and enrolled in public high school—causing him to question everything he’s learned and threatening his relationship with his unpredictable father. The feature film will be produced by ImageMovers, the production company behind such hits as Forrest Gump and Back to the Future, and Jeremy Bolt of Impact Pictures, producers of the billion-dollar Resident Evil franchise.
Night of the Zoombies takes place at the family-run Colepper Zoo. When the zoo is struck by a meteor containing a weird space virus, the animals are transformed into drooling, purple, glowing zoombies bent on one thing: making more zoombies! In all the madness, a young jerboa named Gracie teams up with other zoo animal survivors to escape the zoo and save the world. This film is co-directed by Ricardo Curtis, a seasoned animator and director who’s worked on The Iron Giant, Monsters, Inc. and The Book of Life, and Rodrigo Perez-Castro, an Annie Award-nominated animator and director who recently directed the hand-drawn animated film Koati and whose other credits include Ferdinand, Rio 2, and The Book of Life.
